Phoenix News Site Suspended for “Illegal” Coverage

The Cyberspace Administration of China has suspended Phoenix New Media’s popular online news portal ifeng.com for “disseminat[ing] illegal and harmful information, distort[ing] news headlines, and shar[ing] news information in violation of rules.” The site’s technology channel will be suspended for a month, while its news and financial channels, app and mobile site will be suspended for two weeks. The shutdown of ifeng.com comes after newly-installed CAC chief Zhuang Rongwen vowed to clamp down on “negative elements” and promote “positive energy” last week. At the South China Morning Post, Nectar Gan reports:

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on Wednesday ordered Phoenix New Media’s news portal Ifeng.com to carry out a “thorough and in-depth rectification”.

[…] NYSE-listed Phoenix New Media is the second major Chinese news portal to fall victim to a new wave of tightened internet control under Zhuang, who took over the helm of the powerful watchdog in August.

A briefing from TechNode explains why the suspension of the popular news portal is noteworthy: […] Online content providers, including news services and entertainment platforms, have faced increasing scrutiny from government departments. Short video platforms have been targeted for hosting “inappropriate” content in an effort to increase government controls over cultural content. ifeng.com’s suspension comes a week after CAC chief Zhuang Rongwen promised to further extend control over online spaces, saying “positive energy” should be promoted, while “negative elements” should be suppressed.

It obviously could be that in near future the present Austrian government in its onslaught of the Austrian mass media will undertake similar measures to ensure the correctness of mass media reporting and to prevent any negative slandering and cheap propaganda against the true measures of the freely and democratioc elected government of Austria. *) The extremist FPÖ - Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs - has acknowledged her fascistic heritage by changing the name to FAPÖ - Faschistische Partei Österreichs). As such, the new old party has strengthened the co-operation with Israel and China.

When Akran Natsheh, a reporter for the Al Quds satellite channel, arrived at his office in Hebron in the morning of Thursday, July 13, he found that several of the doors had been pried open. Shards of wood were everywhere, and papers were strewn about on the floor. It certainly looked like an ordinary robbery, but then he found that several of his hard drives had been removed. His suspicions about the perpetrators were confirmed when one of his co-workers showed him the note he found posted on the front door by the Israeli army. It indicated that the offices had been stormed because “Al Quds serves an illegal organization.”
